A 25 year old Grindr user tried to blackmail a grandfather by threatening to out him.
Kieran Thurling met the victim on Grindr for sex eight times at his home in Devon before he started demanding money.
He told him he would put up posters in the community where he lived unless he paid him £600.
The victim did not even know the other man’s name and could barely describe him to police because he had always worn a hoodie over his face when they met.
The divorcee sought police help as he was terrified of being outed because neither his ex-wife, children or grandchildren had no clue about his private life.
He was told to deposit the cash in a secret hiding place and Thurling was arrested when he went to pick it up.
Thurling, of Ashleigh Close, Uffculme in Devon, admitted blackmail and was jailed for 20 months, suspended for two years and ordered to do 150 hours unpaid community work and 25 days of rehabilitation activities at Exeter Crown Court.
He also imposed an indefinite restraining order forbidding any contact of any sort with the victim and a ban on him being identified publicly.
