Same-Sex Weddings Legal From Today In Costa Rica

Minutes after midnight Daritza Araya and Alexandra Qu Castillo celebrated their love live on TV in a ceremony held in San Isidro de Heredia.


After years of wrangling same-sex weddings will be allowed in the Central American country from today. It is the first country in the region to embrace this equality.

Last week, 26 conservative legislators tried to defy that deadline by proposing yet another 18-month extension due to the ongoing pandemic. However, the Legislative Assembly rejected the motion, thus making marriage equality the law of the land.

An unstoppable trend

Same-sex marriage or is legally performed and recognised (nationwide or in some jurisdictions) in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Israelrecognizes same-sex marriages entered into abroad as full marriages.

Some other countries like Mexico and Uruguay recognise civil unions.
