The 2024 LGBT+ Positive Role Model is Pliny Soocoormanee. Congratulations!
Pliny is Executive Officer of the Peter Tatchell Foundation who was honoured with the prestigious National Diversity Award at last week’s award ceremony.
Pliny, who has lived in the UK for 18 years, is recognised for his tireless advocacy for LGBT+ rights globally. Notably, he led a campaign in Mumbai urging the International Olympic Committee to avoid hosting the Games in countries with anti-LGBT+ policies.
Upon receiving the award on October 4, Pliny stated, “I am deeply honoured to receive this award, but the real victory is for all those in the LGBT+ community whose voices are often silenced.” He dedicated the award to the Afghan LGBT group Roshaniya, emphasizing the need for solidarity in the ongoing struggles for justice and freedom.
Peter Tatchell, founder of the Foundation, commended Pliny’s impactful work, saying, “His work, from challenging international homophobia to supporting refugees fleeing persecution, is saving lives and changing hearts and minds.”
