Victoria Police have arrested thirteen individuals in connection with a series of attacks targeting gay men lured through online dating apps like Grindr.
Recent reports indicate that similar incidents have occurred in Canberra, Victoria, and Western Australia. Victims were allegedly drawn in by fake profiles, assaulted, robbed, threatened, and subjected to homophobic slurs.
In July, Victoria Police received reports from five men who were attacked after being lured through gay dating apps. These attacks involved the use of geo-tagging to locate victims’ homes, and some took place in public. Victims were allegedly filmed, and personal items like bags, wallets, and phones were stolen.
Kelly Lawson, Acting Commander of the Priority and Safer Communities Division, reassured the community: “Victoria Police is committed to the safety and well-being of LGBTIQA+ communities. Everyone has the right to meet new people safely.”
Among those arrested, four teenagers were identified. A 17-year-old from Mooroolbark was charged with attempted armed robbery and criminal damage, while a 17-year-old from Avondale Heights and a 16-year-old from Maidstone were arrested for blackmail and released pending summons. An 18-year-old from Craigieburn, charged with home invasion and recklessly causing injury, will face court in November.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have urged anyone who has experienced such attacks to come forward. They also advise caution when using dating apps, encouraging users to protect their identity and verify others before meeting in person.
